Super Billy

In 1970 Topps released a set they modestly called Topps Super.

Billy Williams was one of the 42 players on the checklist and I recently picked up his card

The cards were "super" because of their size, 5 1/4" x 3 1/8".  They were also printed on cardboard that was much thicker than what was used on regular cards.  You can also see from the scan the the cards had rounded corners.

The backs of the card used the same design as the 1970 base set.  Due to the difference in proportions, there is some extra white space around the border.

Eight cards in the set, including Billy's, were short-printed, which drives up the price.  The Standard Catalog lists of price of $20 for a NM version of the card.  Mine isn't NM, and mine didn't cost anywhere near $20.

If you're interested in any of the other cards in the set, here is the complete checklist:

  1. I remember a friend of mine having some of these when we were kids but I never did. I don't recall seeing the packs anywhere. Actually I think all of my cards came from one particular drugstore in my neighborhood so that really limits my "anywhere". I think the only one I have now is the Ron Santo.
