The Cubs Rookie Cards From the '70s and '80s

I figured I might as well go all the way with this, so here are the Cubs rookie cards from the '70s and '80s.  The cards run through the 1982 set.  The rookie cards disappeared about the same time that the Traded sets started.  Perhaps Topps thought the two were redundant?

During the mid '70s Topps did away with the team-exclusive rookie cards and arranged the players by position.  The team cards returned in 1978.

There are 21 cards for 31 different players.

Of the 31, these had a decent career: Burt Hooton, Bill Madlock, Andy Thornton, Manny Trillo, Mike Krukow, and Dennis Lamp.  That's only six out of the 31.

Some of these cards have been written about in earlier posts.  The sad story of Steve Macko is here.  Want to know which of these is my favorite? Click here.

  1. Interesting how they kept recycling guys from 1979-1982. Weren't there any other promising Cubs prospects lurking in AAA?

  2. Jason: NO. (lol)

I think Brock Davis had his first card in the 1963 set for Houston, and his second was this 1971 card.

  3. Jay Howell too. He spent 15 years in the majors, mostly as a reliever. Probably best known as a Dodger in the late 80s.

I started collecting in '71 and have always laughed at the name "Roe Skidmore." It sounds more like an anagram than somebody's real name.
