The 2004 edition of E-X ended up being the brand's swan song. It went out on a bizarre note, too. The set was reduced in size to just 65 cards. The first 40 was the base and the final 25 were /500 rookie cards. Sounds like it wouldn't be too difficult to get the whole set, right?
Well, only if you had deeeep pockets. The price of a pack was $200. Yes, that is $200, not $2.00. For two hundred bucks you got a pack with seven cards... four base cards, one rookie card, an autographed card, and a relic card.
There were three Cubs in the base set, but none in the rookie part. That made it fairly simple for me. I paid $5.19 for the three Cubs cards. Not a bad deal when you consider that someone paid $28.57 per card when buying a pack in 2004.
Skybox's parent company, Fleer, went belly-up in 2005, which is why E-X ended with the 2004 set. If Fleer survived, I wonder if there would have been a 2005 E-X? Did they sell enough $200 packs to make the brand profitable? We'll never know.
Anyway, below are the final E-X Cubs from 2004.
