Uncharted Waters

As a Cub fan I am in uncharted waters.

It's August 30 and the Cubs have the best record in baseball along with a 14 game lead in the division.  This is totally unprecedented in my lifetime.

Among the Cubs five division winning teams, on August 30th the 1984 Cubs had the biggest lead, 6 games.  A 14 game lead is more than double that.

Do I (can I) start to feel confident?

Or do I anticipate the inevitable heartbreak?

It seems like they are in a very good place.  They've been playing good ball since the All-Star break. They have a manager that knows how to keep them sharp and get them ready for the post-season.

But they are the Cubs.

Do I (can I) start to feel confident?

Or do I anticipate the inevitable heartbreak?

How would you fans of teams without a 108 year drought be feeling if your team was in the same position as the Cubs?

Help...I am floundering in uncharted waters!

  1. I'm confident we will make the post-season but I try not to dwell on how they'll do in the post-season. They may not win it all this year but the plan has always been to build a perennial winner that will get several chances at the ultimate prize. So while I'll be heartbroken if they fall short this season I will take comfort in the fact that they can (should?) have more chances in the future.

  2. I would normally make a snarky White Sox fan comment, but I'll hold my tongue. :)

  3. I think their odds of making the playoffs are 100 percent. The rest of the post season we just can't predict. Excited September is almost here and let's see if the Cubs can get a jolt of energy from the September call-ups!

  5. I felt like beating the Cardinals in the NLDS last year was that first hurdle. There is no way in the world anyone could have predicted the series Daniel Murphy was going to have, and then laid an egg in the WS. But the pitching usually drives the ship, and the Cubs look great for a week, then don't for a week. Kinda how last year went - looked great against the Pirates and Cardinals, then stunk against the Mets. I still maintain that if the Cubs do win a World Series, I'll cry like a baby. And knowing they are set up for at least three more years, it's something Cubdom has never experienced.
