The Rest of the Playoffs Managers

On Sunday I featured cards of the four playoff managers that were one-time Cubs. I didn't want to slight the other four, so here are cards I have of them from their playing days. The card I'll use is the earliest one I've got.

Joe Torre: He is the only one of the four that I'm not using a rookie card. Torre's rookie card is from the 1962 set and I go back only to 1969. He is shown with the Cardinals, having just be obtained in a trade with the Braves after the 1968 season.

Charlie Manuel: As a player he was "Chuck" not Charlie. I wonder when and why the switch was made. I have absolutely no memory of him as a player. I wonder if his career .198 average is what made him forgettable? The card is from Topps 1970, one of two cards of Manuel during his active career.

Ron Gardenhire: Another guy I have little recollection of as a player. He made the Topps Traded set in 1982. That's the set that had another rookie infielder in it, a guy named Ripken.

Mike Scioscia: Him, I remember. With Steve Yeager, then Mike Scioscia, Mike Piazza, and Paul LoDuca, the Dodgers have had a pretty decent run of catchers. This is his Fleer rookie card from 1981. They beat Topps and Donruss by a season.

  1. there were a couple of less than decent guys (at least with the dodgers) between piazza and loduca - http://garveyceyrusselllopes.blogspot.com/2009/10/evolution-of-catcher.html

1982 gardy is a far cry from 2009 gardy.
