12

On 12-12-12 I thought it would be appropriate to look at all of the Cubs that have worn the number 12.

The Cubs started wearing uniform numbers in 1932 and since then a total of 44 different player wore the number.  Some are familiar names---Shawon Dunston, Dusty Baker, Alfonso Soriano.  Others are players that even I never heard of---Guy Mancuso, Chico Hernandez, Chris Kitsos.

Of the 44 who were #12, I've got cards of 25 of them.

Here are the 19 missing from my collection:

Bob O'Farrell (1934), Jim Weaver (1934), Gus Mancuso (1939), Rip Russell (1940-42), Johnny Hudson (1941), Chico Hernandez (1943), Billy Holm (1943), Roy Easterwood (1944), Dewey Williams (1944-45.1947), Lou Stringer (1946), Cal McLish (1949), Tommy Brown (1952-53), Chris Kitsos (1954), Ed Winceniak (1956-57), Dick Johnson (1958), Mel Roach (1961), Jerry Tabb (1976), Bobby Darwin (1977), Angel Echevarria (2002)

No too many familiar names there.

Now the 25 players with a card...and if one shows a 12 on it--even better!

  1. I guess you could say 12 was not the most awesome number in Cubs history.

    Bonus points for Dunston, though.

  2. Fun stuff and an interesting timeline of how much more crowded the jerseys have become over the years with pinstripes, sleeve patches, numbers on the front and names on the back.
