You Never Know Where It Leads

One thing I really enjoy about the hobby is the hunt.  I like looking for more cards, especially cards I've never seen before.  And sometimes the hunt leads you on an unexpected path.

Case in point...

I saw an auction on Ebay for a 1/1 super-fractor of Darwin Barney's 2008 Bowman Chrome card.  I don't often see 1/1's pop up. so I decided to watch the auction and see how high it would go.  I was hoping that there wouldn't be much interest in a seven year old card of a guy who is pretty much finished.

I also thought a 1/1 would be the ultimate way to finish off the 2008 Bowman Chrome rainbow.

Out of curiosity, I looked back at all the cards currently in the rainbow.  I was surprised.

My current rainbow consisted of just two cards, the base and the Refractor.  For reasons that escape me, I never pursued this one.  My thoughts shifted from adding a 1/1 to adding several other parallels. I was on an unexpected path and off to Ebay and COMC!

According to Cardboard Connection, the prospect cards have a base, Refractor (/500). X-fractor (/250), Blue (/150), Gold (/50), Orange (/25), Red (/5), printing plates, and the 1/1 Super-fractor.

I've been able to come up with six of these....all but the red, plates, and Super-fractor (turns out there is interest in the card and it sold or $46 which is out of my price range).

Behold the much bigger and better Bowman Chrome Barney Rainbow!

    1. Five possible reasons Barney's super-tractor sold for $46 on eBay:

      #1: shill bidding

#2: Barney himself is trying to build his Bowman Chrome Barney Rainbow

#3: Barney's mom is trying to build his son's Bowman Chrome Rainbow

#4: Eddie Vedder wanted to prove that he's richer and is a bigger Cub's fan than Billy Corgan, so he sniped this card at the last second... keeping it out of the lead singer of the Smashing Pumpkins hands.

#5: I just won the lottery and wanted to give Cubs bloggers something to write about ;)

  2. Im not sure why or how Barney cards seem to hold their value on ebay. I was watching this auction as well, would have been a nice card to have!
