I've got 20,922 Cubs cards from 316 different brands listed on a spreadsheet. A random number generator picked five cards, one each from the past several decades.
1900s - 1970s: 1956 Topps #314 Hobie Landrith Here is the only player in MLB history named Hobie. He came to the Cubs from the Reds after the 1955 season. It looks like he's wearing his Reds shin guards in the action shot. The Topps artist had an easy time changing the big picture to the Cubs since both the Reds and the Cubs wore hats with a wishbone C.
1980s: 1985 Fleer #64 Dick Ruthven He was the Cubs Opening Day starter in 1984 but got hurt in May. When he returned in July, the Cubs had added both Rick Sutcliffe and Dennis Eckersley. Ruthven ended up the #5 starter. He as the #5 starter in 1985 as well. He broke his toe in August and went on the DL, remaining there for the rest of the season.
1990s: 1992 Action Packed #39 Ron Santo The irony of this card is that in a set called "Action Packed," they use a posed picture of Ran Santo. Action shots were used for all of the other modern Cubs in the set 2000s: 2007 Goudey #70 Kerry Wood Don't mess with Kerry Wood!
2010s: 2011 Topps T60A #CP Carlos Pena Another example of very poor penmanship here. What a mess!
Love that '56 Landrith! And the Santo AP is nice too. Ron has a lot of neat cards and most of them are out of my price range. Not that one though!
ReplyDeleteNice idea to talk about the Cubbies cards. Dig looking at the cards, even with Pena's poor penmanship.
