1900s - 1970s: 1966 Topps #580 Billy Williams Billy had a nice season in 1966. He played in every game, hit .276, belted 29 homers and drove in 91 runs. And after the season, there was talk that he was on the trading block. Thank goodness the Cubs didn't trade him.

Five Random Cubs Cards
I've got 14,235 Cubs cards from 108 different brands listed on a spreadsheet. A random number generator picked five cards, one each from the past several decades.
1980s: 1987 Seven Eleven Mideast #3 Jody Davis The 1987 season was Jody's last good one. He hit 19 HRs, including his 100th career homer, just like David Ross did on Friday.
1990s: 1991 Donruss #504 Ryne Sandberg The RNG is not giving us any scrubs, so far! The 1991 season saw Ryno become the first second baseman to win nine gold gloves.
2000s: 2008 Topps Year in Review #32 Derrek Lee D-Lee's doubles streak marked the first time in at least 50 years that a major leaguer doubled in eight straight games.
2010s: 2010 More Tales of the Game #9 Andre Dawson The RNG finished strong...Williams, Davis, Sandberg, Lee, and Dawson....not too shabby. The theme of the card is league MVPs that played on last place teams. Dawson was the MVP in 1987 when the Cubs won just 76 games and finished last.

The Cubs would have made it to the 1969 World Series for sure if they had had Curt Blefary instead of Billy. ;)
ReplyDeletewas that the trade rumor after the 66 season?
