I've got 20,999 Cubs cards from 316 different brands listed on a spreadsheet. A random number generator picked five cards, one each from the past several decades.
1900s - 1970s: 1949 Eureka #60 Doyle Lade Looks like Eureka had a bit of a problem learning how to properly center a picture. Also, does that glove that he has look huge?
1980s: 1984 Topps #736 Dick Ruthven Ruthven was the Opening Day starter for the Cubs in 1984 and picked up the win. He got hurt in mid-May. After his return in July he was knocked down to the #5 starter. He didn't make the NLCS roster.
1990s: 1999 Topps Chrome #280 Mark Grace The ball really stands out on the Chrome card.2000s: 2007 Fleer #267 Carlos Zambrano The pink ribbon on his uniform means this is from a game on Mothers Day. I assumed that a 2007 card would have a picture from 2206, but Zambrano didn't pitch on Mothers Day, 2006. He did in 2005, which means Fleer used a two-year-old photo. Z pitched a complete game against the Phillies and the Cubs won 2-1.
I saw a few of the cards from that Bryant set at a show this morning. Didn't buy them. It seems Topps has stopped doing that, hasn't it? It never made sense to me that they used such young players--it would be more interesting to do it for a veteran where you could show different uniforms and such. Maybe a few cards of him with different teammates. Someone like Max Scherzer or Miggy Cabrera. Maybe this year a career retrospective for Pujols.
ReplyDeleteAgree! The guy had only played for three seasons.
