All I've Got of Him: Larry Bowa

Shortstop Larry Bowa spent three and a half seasons with the Cubs after spending 12 years with the Phillies.  He will always be remembered fondly by Cub fans, but not for anything he did.  Rather, that he was not good enough to a straight shortstop for shortstop trade (Bowa for Ivan DeJesus) meant that the Cubs got the Phillies to throw in a prospect named Ryne Sandberg.

His time with the Cubs was during the three-brand era, so I've got Topps, Donruss, and Fleer cards of Bowa.  There are also some team-issued cards, stickers and a couple oddballs, making a total of 23 cards.

  1. I like the card with the sliding Pirate. Is that future Cub Richie Hebner?

  2. The Cubs and Cardinals once had a handshake agreement to send DeJesus to the Cardinals for Garry Templeton, but the Cubs backed out the next day.

  3. To be fair, Bowa was on the downside of his career by then, so your "not good enough" statement should include "by that time".

  4. I mistook the Nestle for O-Pee Chee at first. Are the OPC "parallels" a set/brand you're chasing since you are looking for new ones to add?

    1. I've held off chasing O-Pee-Chee since the cards are Topps clones and the 60's and early 70's versions are pretty expensive.
