2002 was the year of the big sets. Topps introduced Total that year, a set that, if you believe it's name, would have cards of all the players -- a total set. Upper Deck matched Topps with their version called 40 Man. This set was massive, 1182 cards. That beat Topps Total by nearly 200 cards. It wasn't cheap either. A pack of ten cards cost $3. At 30¢ per card, you'd have to spend over $350 to get 1182 cards. And what's the chance you'd get a double or two?
Fast forward 19 years and those 40 man cards are 18¢ each at Sportlots. I needed to get 47 Cubs cards and was able to do that with just three different sellers. It's always nice when I can keep the Sportlot sellers to a minimum and save on the shipping costs.
