I picked up the 2021 South Bend Cubs team set while I was at the ballpark this past weekend. One thing with minor league card sets is that they are out of date the minute they are released. The rosters are always in flux and that is definitely the case with the South Bend Cubs.
The set consists of the team card, four staff members, and 31 players.
These are the staff members, manager Michael Ryan and three coaches
Of the 31 players, there are just 17 that are still with South Bend.
These 13 are on the active roster.
Casey, Roederer, and Vazquez are on the IL while Jensen is on the developmental list.
The bulk of the players no longer with South Bend have moved up to AA.
These eleven are with the Tennessee Smokies.
A couple have jumped two levels to AAA Iowa.
That leaves one more player. What happened to him?
After shuttling between A and AA and a couple of injuries, D.J. Wilson retired on May 31.
That is a really gaudy design--usually minor league sets are a lot more sedate. I'm not sure I'd want this kind of design to become the norm, but it's a nice change of pace.
