2017 Series Two Checklist By Team

The Series Two checklist came out a couple days ago, about three weeks ahead of the cards' release.  The first thing I do when a checklist comes out is to check on the Cubs.  There are ten Cubs from me to get.

Here's a sneak peak at nine of the ten cards, since they were a part of the factory team set.  The Jay and Uehara cards are photoshopped.  Hopefully Topps will use an early season picture for the series two cards.  The only mystery is the Rob Zastryzny card.

For those of you that do the same with your team, take a look below to see what you are chasing.

I'm Happ-y Again!

A couple weeks ago I picked up a relic card for Ian Happ.

Now I've got his autograph, too.

This comes from the Promising Pros set in Donruss 2017.  Its logoless and Happ has borrowed Kyle Schwarber's number, but it does meet my rule, so I'll take it.

With the addition of Happ, I'm now up to 122 different Cubs players with a certified autograph that shows them as a Cubs during a season they played for the Cubs.

1970 Cubs Cartoons

I've always got a kick out of the cartoons that were drawn on the backs of cards in the '50s, 60's and 70's.  They were a unique way to highlight player facts and trivia.

The 1970 Topps set had 23 Cubs with a base card.  Of those 23, there are cartoons on the backs of 13 cards.  Today I'll take a look at them.

I've divided the cartoons into two categories.  Typically the cartoons highlighted a baseball career fact or a personal fact.

Let's start with the career facts:

In case you don't know who's who, from top to bottom were Glenn Beckert, Bill Hand, Randy Hundley, Fergie Jenkins, Paul Popovich, Billy Williams, and Don Young.  The Holtzman cartoon has the most recent event.  Don Young's is one of the wordiest in the entire 1970 set.

Five of the cartoons highlighted more person things about the players.  We have farmer Jim Hickman, college graduate Don Kessinger, chip off the block Ken Rudolph, restaurateur Ron Santo, and boxer Willie Smith.

Five Random Cubs Cards

I've got 14,890 Cubs cards from 121 different brands listed on a spreadsheet. A random number generator picked five cards, one each from the past several decades.

1900s - 1970s: 1972 Topps #335 Bill Hands After a subpar 1971 season, Hands bounced back nicely in 1972, going 11-8 with a 3.00 ERA.  But wear and tear on his arm was starting to take a toll on him, and the Cubs sold high, trading him after the season to the Twins.  Though traded up north to Minnesota, his career went south in a hurry and he was done after the 1975 season.

1980s: 1987 Fleer Glossy #556 Ron Cey Early print dates led to this '87 card of the Penguin with the Cubs, though he was traded to the A's in January, 1987 for Luis Quinones.  He hit only .221 in Oakland and was released on July 15, ending his big league career.

1990s: 1995 Bowman #295 Randy Myers  For the second time in three years, the Cubs closer lead the NL in saves in 1995, posting 38.  The 1995 season was his last of a three year contract with the Cubs, and you would have thought he could have turned the three good years with the Cubs into an even bigger payday.  But that's not how it turned out, as he signed a two-year deal with the Orioles that payed him less per season that what the Cubs paid him in 1995.

2000s: 2003 Donruss Team Heroes #118 Billy Williams  This card comes from the player collection.  It looks to be a picture from early spring in 1966 or 1967.  The bleacher are behind him looks much different today.  The catwalk is long gone, replaced today by expanded bleacher seating.  And notice no basket either--it was just a plain 'ol ivy-covered wall.

2010s: 2011 Bowman #49 Tyler Colvin  The 2011 season was Colvin's last with the Cubs.  He hit just .150 over 80 games and also spent time in AAA trying to figure things out.  After the season he was traded to the Rockies. It turned out to be a pretty lousy deal for the Cubs.  It wasn't that Colvin did much, but D.J. LeMahieu was a part of the same swap that got the Cubs a very bad Ian Stewart.

All I've Got of Him: Dexter Fowler

Yesterday Dexter Fowler returned to Wrigley Field for the first time as a Cardinal.  He get his World Series ring and lots of love from the fans and his former teammates,  Then he hits a home run to lead off the game.  Finally, the Cubs win.

It was a very good day at Wrigley.

I like Dexter Fowler and the energy he brings.  I thing the Cubs are missing that spark this year. I wish him well for the 144 games the Cardinals don't play against the Cubs.

In his short two year stay with the Cubs I picked up 19 of his cards.  Ten per year is a pretty high average for a guy who isn't a superstar.  I think he was in just about every brand I collect at least once over those two years.

All I've Got of Him: Rick Reuschel

Here's all I've got of Big Daddy.

Rick Reuschel was the ace of the staff for the second half of the Seventies.  That was good enough to see him in several sets besides the Topps set.  MSA, SSPC, Jewel, Hostess, and Kelloggs all included him.  He's had a couple of certified autographs including on with the Big Daddy inscription.  All of this plus a few others brings my Rick Reuschel count to 39 cards.

2017 Pro Debut Inserts

The 2017 Pro Debut set has three insert sets and a Cub prospect is represented in each

Ian Happ is In the Wings.  Topps really went out on a limb with this one!

Topps teamed up with Ben Hill for this one.  His blog, Ben's Biz Blog goes to different minor league parks looking for unique or unusual things.  This card shows the South Bend Cubs team store.  It is located in a former synagogue, which is located just beyond the left field wall.  The synagogue closed in 1991 and the building was purchased by the city.  It sat empty until is was repurposed as a team store in 2012.  It has to be one of the most unique teams store locations in all of baseball.

The Promos Night set included the night when the Myrtle Beach Pelicans became the Mermen for one night.

Kenny Powers would be proud.

I also went ahead and got one relic from the Fragments of the Farm set.  This is a piece of a flag that flew at the AAA Iowa Cubs home, Principal Park.
