HELP WANTED!!

It should be pretty obvious to anyone who has been reading my blog that I have mostly older Topps cards and just the base and update sets of the newer cards. I'd like to start collecting other sets, but as someone who is just getting back into this, I have no idea where to begin!

So I am looking to those of you who have kept current for help. If you were a team set collector, what would you suggest I go for? There are just too many different options out there for me to have any idea what to look at. What is your favorite? Suggestions, please!!

I have also posted lists of cards that I have available for trades. These are leftovers from when I was putting sets together or from when I was upgrading my sets. If you are looking for mint type cards, these aren't for you. But if you are just looking for some cards from any of these years, this could be an easy way for you to pick them up. I'm willing to trade for newer cards that you think would interest a Cub collector. Let me know what you've got.

  1. Like you I am a team set collector and my favorite cards are vintage. My favorite newer sets are the Heritage. They have the same look and feel of the originals but you get to collect he players that you are seeing right now. You can also choose Bowman or Topp Heritage. Topps seems eaiser to get though. I haved had the most fun just blind trading for my team. Tell someone you are getting a bunch of cards and let them surprise you with what they send back. If you are just in for a challange try Goudey, the short prints make it harder to get your whole team. I would be more than happy to send you a whole bunch of newer Cubs. Just drop me an e-mail.I haven't went through your traid bait lists yet but Im sure there aresome Sox I need in there somewhere.

  2. If you have some commons to clear out you could kill two birds with one stone and do some team lot trades. That worked well for me as I got back into the hobby. If you're interested shoot me an email and we can set up a trade, Cubs for Rangers. Let me know and I'll get you some numbers.

  3. There are a lot of ways you could go about this. If I were a team collector nowadays I would limit myself to five sets: Topps base, Upper Deck base, Topps Herritage, Upper Deck Goudey, and Topps Allen & Ginter. These are the five best and easiest to collect products in my opinion. I think you'll really get a kick out of the retro styled cards in Herritage, Goudey and A&G. If you want to make it easy I would avoid trying to collect all the parallels, black backs, short prints, you'll drive yourself crazy ask anyone who's tried to complete the Herritage set.

  4. I agree, go with Heritage and Allen & Ginter. A&G is by far my favorite. The nice thing about it is it comes out later in the year, so you can get some RCs that weren't released earlier in the year. i.e. Fukudome from last years set. Also being a fellow Cubs fan, I too just started a blog. Please go to http://fatcat4262.blogspot.com
I also have a couple Soto rookies for you. Send me an email fatcat4262@yahoo.com with your address and I'll send them out to you.

  5. I'd say go with UD Masterpieces or Topps Heritage. Allen & Ginter is nice, but I'm not sure that is exactly what you are looking for.

If you are trying to acquire some of the newer Cubbies from 2000-present, I'd be more than willing to send you a bunch of Cubs cards in exchange for Indians cards, Grady Sizemore, or doubles of your early 1970's cards.

  6. I'd definitely recommend Topps Heritage. It looks great, looks retro, and it's all baseball. My favorite is Allen & Ginter, but you may or may not like all non-baseball/non-sports cards. Masterpieces might be something you're interested in, too. The problem with A&G and Masterpieces and Goudey is the short-prints are maddening. And if there's a Cub in the short-prints, frustration is involved.

I would LOVE to take some '71 or '72 doubles off your hands. You can shoot me an email, or I'll send one to you.

Oh, and like Spiff said, team trades are great. I've done several (including a couple Rangers-Dodgers deals with Spiff).

  7. Thanks for all the advice! I stumbled on to Topps Heritage a few months ago and loved it - so much so that I already completed all of the Cubs sets.

I'm thinking that I will zero in on Upper Deck base. It seems most like what I'm used to, but with some interesting twists.

I'll be emailing many of you later today. We're getting a good snow storm in SW Michigan today, so I am alternating between baseball cards and shoveliing.

  8. I've got a fair number of duplicates from most of the mentioned sets (Goudey, UD Base, Heritage, etc). Let me know once you figure out what you want to try and collect!

  9. Start with what you know from the past... the base sets of the flagship sets. Topps & Upper Deck regular editions, then branch out from that. The retro sets are a good secondary option. If there's time and money after that, scope out the base sets from the higher end releases on eBay. You'd be surprised at how cheap they can be after the initial excitement wears off.

  11. Definitely with the Heritage, AG, Goudey...

...but I would suggest going back quite a few years. 1998 to 2004 stuff has more originality than today's stuff.

Great site by the way! I like your writing style. I'm adding you to my links on TNB.
