Monday Monday

Center fielder Rick Monday spent five seasons with the Cubs, from 1972 to 1976. He had the best seasons of his career while with the Cubs.

Last week I picked up this card from Topps' 2002 American Pie Through the Years set.

Its got several things I like.

The picture of Monday is from his 1976 card, showing him in the home uniforms. The jersey swatch is from a home jersey, too, and it's got a pinstripe. And the blue on the card looks good with Cubbie blue.

All in all, its a nice card and I'm glad to add it to my relic collection.

One Rick Monday memory: During the early '70's. Cubs organist Frank Pelico had a theme song for each player that he would play when that player would come to the plate. Rick Monday's song was "Never On A Sunday." He played the line that went with the lyrics, "Oh you can kiss me on a Monday, a Monday; a Monday is very very good."

Well, I don't want to kiss Rick Monday. And he wasn't very very good; I think the best I can give him is that with the Cubs he was good

  1. I have a copy of that card as well. I like that you can see the fabric from the back as well as the front.
