Five Random Cubs Cards

I've got 20,488 Cubs cards from 301 different brands listed on a spreadsheet. A random number generator picked five cards, one each from the past several decades.

1900s - 1970s: 1957 Hall of Fame Postcards Joe McCarthy  This postcard is not from 1957.  The Hall of Fame postcards don't have issue dates since they keep cranking them out.  I date my using the year the person pictured was inducted into Cooperstown.  McCarthy is in the hall because of his time with the Yankees.  But he began his managing career with the Cubs.  His .579 winning percentage over five seasons places him fifth all-time on the Cubs managers list.

1980s: 1989 Panini #53 Wrigley Field  This comes from the sticker sets that Panini put out in the last '80s and early '90s, when the actually had an MLB license.  The lights were brand new when this picture was taken.  It's hard to believe that it has been 34 years since they were installed.

1990s: 1998 Collectors Choice #202 Kerry Wood  UD did a little switch-a-roo with this card.  It was included only in the factory sets, replacing a card of Tony Barron.  I guess Wood's strike-out record setting game in May had something to do with that.

2000s: 2007 USA Baseball #8 Darwin Barney Jersey Autograph Black I did enjoy collecting all the different Darwin Barney cards, but I haven't been able to muster up the desire to do the same with any current Cub.

2010s: 2014 Tier One #AD Andre Dawson Jersey  I'm not sure why I picked up this card for the Dawson collection.  I must have gotten a good deal.  I looked back in the WW Archives and found the post I wrote when I got the card.  I cost me $1.82.

  1. I will ALWAYS buy a relic of a Hall of Famer for under $2, unless I already own the card.
