Cubs Scrabble

I came up with this as I was looking over the 47 players that suited up for the Cubs this season.  I was struck by the number of players with a last name that started with the letter Z.  The Cubs had three, Zagunis, Zastryzny, and Zobrist.  In all the years of MLB there have been just 97 Z's, and three of them were on the Cubs this year.

Then I noticed that there was also a Q, Quintana.  Z's and a Q got me thinking that if we were playing Scrabble the Cubs could really rack up the points.

If Scrabble points were awarded for the first letter of a player's name, how many points would the Cubs earn (because I'm lazy I'm just using the first letter of the last name, not all the letters from the name)?  The Q and the three Z's bring in 40 points.  What about the rest?

I did a little figuring:

They ended up with 144 points.

For comparision's sake, I also did the Cardinals and White Sox.  The Red Birds tallied 118 points, and they had one more player that the Cubs.  The White Sox came closer, 136, but they had four more players than the Cubs.

Three Z's and a Q may make the Cubs unstoppable!  It's possible that they won't win the World Series again, so I may have to settle for Scrabble champs.

  1. What a great idea! I may have to figure out the Red Sox...Hmmm...Vasquez does net 28 points, but I only get 4 from Sale...

  2. Zastryzny is worth 33 points alone. He has to be the MLB Scrabble champion. Right?
