Topps Living Set Rick Monday

Here's the Living Set card that I had skipped, Rick Monday.  It came out the week of July 5 and had a print run of 1,612 cards.  That is the second-lowest of the 22 Cubs cards in the set.  Only Patrick Wisdom's run of 1,547 was lower.

I was surprised to see Monday shown as a Cub.  He played for three teams and his five years with the Cubs was the shortest span of the three.  I think most fans think of his as a Dodgers, since that is the team he played for the longest, and has been a part of their broadcasts for many more years.

The picture that the artist used for the card is from 1972, the only season the Cubs road uniform had the red, white, and blue piping.  It was Monday's first as a Cub, having come over in the off-season from the A's in exchange for Ken Holtzman.  You can also see that Monday was #7 with the Cubs, as shown by the little number inside the C on the helmet.

Monday is the 22nd Cubs player in the Living Set.  Five of the 22 were retired when they made the set and Monday is the first of the five that is not in the Hall of Fame.

  1. I wonder if the card stock stayed consistent through the years.

  2. I just compared Ian Happs' card (he was the first Cub in the set) with Santo's and the stock seems to be the same.
