Jewel Week: August 16, 1984

The Tribune's food section on Thursday, August 16 included the latest ad from Jewel.  Again, it was four Cubs and four Sox, but, well, I don't really care about the Sox players.

August 16 was an off day for the Cubs. They were on the last leg of a three city road trip.  The trip was not going well.  They split four games with the Expos and then were the victim of a three game sweep by the Astros.  The Cubs never seemed to do very well at the Dome.  From Houston it was on to Cincinnati.  Their lead over the Mets was down to 2½ games.  I know at the time I was thinking "Here we go again, another August collapse."

The ace of the staff, the 1984 NL Cy Young winner, the guy with a 16-1 record.  The guy was total lights-out for the Cubs in '84.

Sorry Night Owl... Penguin as a Cub.  Cey led the team in both home runs (25) and RBIs (97).  Not bad for a 36-year-old.

Moreland found regular playing time in right field once the Cubs traded Bill Buckner and Leon Durham moved full time to first base.

And we finish with a bench player.  Since the '84 Jewel set had just 16 players, we don't get to see as many second stringers as we did with the '69 set.  The Cubs signed Hebner over the winter and he was strictly a bench player in 1984.  He played in just 40 games as a bum shoulder kept him out of action from July and August.

  1. Did you finds any of the pictures released in the early 70's. Those are the ones I am still hunting for. I know early 70's because I distinctly remember the Sox being in red pinstripes.

    1. Jewel had sets in '73 and '77. The '73 set is the one with the Sox in red. I haven't started on that set yet and I'm 3/4 of the way finished with the '77 set.
