Another Relic, With Mixed Feelings....

I've been adding relic cards to my collection from Cubs from the past. My current list includes Banks, Williams, Santo, Jenkins, Grace, Sandberg, Dawson, Maddux, Wood, Lee, Ramirez, Soriano, and Zambrano.

But did you notice there is one pretty big name from recent Cubs history that's missing from the list?

Sammy.

I just wasn't too sure what I wanted to do with him. I have a lot of mixed feelings. Right now I've got more cards of him than of any other player. Its not because he was my favorite, but because he played at the time everyone and their brother was putting out sets.

For at least ten seasons he was the face of the Cubs. And it was exciting when he was hitting all those home runs.

But....

He sure didn't leave Chicago on a good note, walking out on the team during the last game of 2004. And then there's the whole steriods issue. Like I said, I'm very conflicted.

But I gave in. I figured I couldn't just ignore his history with the team.

I decided I would get a Sosa GU, but I wouldn't spend much for I. I found this card, which set me back all of $1.83. Plus, it's got a nice pinstripe on it too. So for better or for worse, you can add Slammy Shammy Soso to my list of Cubs relic cards.

  1. I have a binder with known steroid users (Clemens, Bonds, Palmeiro, etc.). I gave him the benefit of the doubt for a while. He got placed in it two years ago, though. I couldn't get rid of the cards because he played for the Cubs (and some have one of my favorite player, Mark Grace, on them). But they don't merit the same binder as the other Cubs either. Maybe in a few years I'll get over it.

  2. Sammy does seem to have been written out of the Cubs history. That's ok with me. Maybe if the team had won the World Series in 1998 I might remember him with more fondness.
