Lineage '75 Mini Cubs

I've seen a lot of positive comments about the '75 Mini parallels with Lineage. I like them, too. You can take a look at all of the Cubs first, and then I'll have a few things to say about Topps' re-creation job.

These first two have different pictures than the base card. I have no idea why the pictures would be changed. I don't believe that was something that was done in 1975. I've got the original Cubs '75 mini set and they are all identical to the regular sized cards.

The rest of the cards have the same picture.

As far as the color combinations, it was:

Orange/Yellow: 4
Yellow/Blue: 2
Green/Yellow: 1
Orange/Blue: 1
Yellow/Orange: 1

Now, about the way these were made...

First, the "CUBS" font is not the same.

The '75 is on top, Lineage underneath

The C on the Lineage cards is rounded, while the original C has a flat part. Same with the S, more rounded with Lineage than the originals. It seems like every time Topps recreates older cards, the fonts are not identical to the original. I don't understand that.

The next problem is the size of the cards. The Lineage cards are about 1/8" narrower than the '75s. They did match the heights, but why not the width. Doesn't anyone at Topps own a ruler?

While Topps did match the height, they didn't match the size of the two color pieces. You can see that the top color is shorter on the Lineage mini.

Finally, Topps changed the way the infield positions were labeled. On the '75s, it was "2nd Base" while with Lineage it was "Second Baseman".

All of these inconsistencies drive me nuts. If you're going to re-create a card, why make changes?

  1. This happens so often that I wonder if it's to avoid confusion with the actual cards. Some sort of attempt to thwart a weird lawsuit.

The thing that annoys me is that Topps seemed to try to use the actual border colors from the '75 set, except there is no yellow-orange border in the '75 set!

  2. Yeah, they messed the colors up too. Of the colors used for the Cubs in 1975, the only one used with the Lineage minis was Castro's Green/Yellow card. None of the other Lineage combos were used for the Cubs in 1975, including, as you stated, the yellow/orange which didn't even exist.

  3. Love the 1975 Topps design. It's the baseball card equivalent of shag carpeting.

I'm a Cubs collector myself, and I have roughly 1,000 duplicates available for trade. If there's anything in particular you want me to look for, let me know and perhaps we can work something out.

  4. I've got a mini Aramis Ramirez jersey card I'd be willing to swap for a similar Tiger card if you're interested.

    Thanks,

  5. Thanks, but I'm not going after any of the relics; it's just the base and minis for me.

  6. I've had similar thoughts when reviewing Topps's inability to recreate/reprint older cards:

For the life of me, I cannot understand why on reprints they just can't scan the original, clean it up in Photoshop, and then use that as the new card. Similarly, why can't they scan the older design, create a blank area for the photo, and then start inserting new photos? This isn't that hard, but Topps seems to insist that it must be.
