1969 Fleer Stadium Cards

When Fleer sold cloth patches back in the late 60's and early '70s, they had a packaging problem.  The patches were put into wax packs, but the cloth was too flimsy and could get bent easily.  The Fleer solution was to add a card to the pack for rigidity.

Most often seen are the team quiz cards.

These are the three Cubs variations.

But in addition to the logo quiz cards, for a brief time Fleer also had stadium cards.  There are a total of 18 different cards.  Twelve featured current ballparks, including Wrigley Field.  Yankee Stadium and the Astrodome also got a second card.  Finally, four more cards didn't mention a specific stadium but instead promoted baseball.  The Fleer Sticker Project has a nice write-up on the cards here.

This is the Wrigley Field card.  The picture used by Fleer came from the Cubs, and it was also...

...included in the team's Roster Book.  This page is from the 1968 book.

This is one of the four promotional cards.  The ballpark is obviously Wrigley Field - it has no light towers.

I've been looking for these cards for years.  I have a saved Ebay search, but the only card that ever showed up is this one,

from the 1988 Fleer set.  The other side of the card has a Cubs sticker.  This is an 18¢ card.

The cards from 1969 were not 18¢ cards.  But I was the only bidder on the auctions for both of them and was happy to get them and finally cross them off my list.

  2. The Fleer Stadium cards are cool. It stinks that they didn't make one for the Oakland Coliseum or Candlestick Park (or at least they handn't been confirmed by The Fleer Sticker Project).

  3. No, afraid there aren't any for Candlestick or Oakland. I feel the same about not including Memorial Stadium.
