1937 Cubs Scorecard

The 1937 Cubs scorecard was quite a departure from the previous few years.

Though Blue Valley Butter is still the cover sponsor, we don't have a cartoon of kids playing on a plain background.  Instead, we have some Cubs playing on a green background.  That green really pops.  I don't know it for a fact, but my guess is that the cover was created by Otis Shepard.

And for reasons I can't explain, it really works well even though green is not a Cubs color.  Wrigley Field uses green a lot, so maybe the card is invoking Wrigley memories.

Of my seven cards from the 1930s, this is by far my favorite.  You can definitely see a change in design starting in 1937.  Looking at all seven together, it becomes more likely that Otis Shepard started doing the covers in 1937.

The back has some PBR.  Pabst would continue to be shown on the back page through 1962.

The inside was scored though the pencil didn't scan very well.  The game is game 2 from a doubleheader against the Reds on May 29.  The Cubs won 4-2, breaking a tied game with a 2-run eighth inning.  Almost 21,000 fans were at Wrigley that day.
