There have been just eight "Patricks" that have played for the Cubs since 1900. That comes to just one every fifteen seasons. I thought that there would have been more. I have at least one card of each in my collection with the exception of Pat Ragan, who played in just two games for the 1909 Cubs. For him, I borrowed a picture of one of his cards with the Braves.
Pat Moran, 1906-1909
Pat Bourque, 1971 - 1973
Pat Perry, 1988-1989
Patrick Wisdom, 2021
Nice data-dig. Eight is a surprisingly low number considering Patrick is a relatively common name. Do you happen to know what the most common Cubs first name is? Off the top of my head, I'd guess Thomas/Tom/Tommy or Michael/Mike.
ReplyDeleteI used the complete listing of Cubs players on Wikipedia.
Delete#1 is Bill with 55. Add in 17 for Billy and 3 Williams and it is also the largest combo at 75 players.
Next single name was 49 for Bob and 48 for Jim
Bob/Bobby/Robert has 67. (49/16/2)
Jim/Jimmy/Jimmie/James has 66 (48/13/3/2)
Tom/Timmy/Thomas = 42 (30/11/1)
Mike/Michael = 53 (48/5)
Interesting stuff, thanks.
DeleteHappy St. Patrick's Day! Nice theme for today's post, very cool. Were there any Cubs players with the last name Green (or a variation of Green)?
ReplyDeleteDanny Green, OF, 1898–1901
ReplyDeleteAdam Greenberg, OF, 2005
Willie Greene, 3B, 2000
Hey, two of those four played for the Mets, too. (Mahomes and Tabler) We've also had Pat Zachary and Patrick Misch, at least.
ReplyDeletePat Borque was traded for Gonzalo Marquez....and they have the same rookie card. Pat Perry went to a school less than 70 miles from me. I interviewed to teach physics at his high school of Taylorville, IL and chose another school to teach, although it was under consideration.
