As I go through the different Cubs sets from O-Pee-Chee, I plan to also do some comparing between the OPC set and the Topps set
Set Size: O-Pee-Chee - 264, Topps 660
Cubs in set: O-Pee-Chee - 7, Topps 26
The OPC card is on the left. The only design difference is that the autographs are in different places. I wonder why it was OPC felt the need to move it?
Differences on the back include different numbering, the cartoon words and the player paragraphs are bilingual, and the copyright.
These are the seven Cubs that OPC deemed worthy of inclusion.
Ten years ago, I compared my 1977 Topps, Topps Burger King, and Topps Cloth Thurman Munsons and discovered all three cards had different signatures. Now I'm wondering if his OPC card is a 4th variation.

it is different fuji - the all-star banner is gone and the signature is moved. it might look the same as topps cloth though.

The Bobby Murcer is cool since it shows him on the Cubs (and is OPC's best effort at doing so with any of the Cubs 77 - 91 - no 'Now With Cubs' caption. You can add the Madlock/Brett league leader if you want to go all in for the 'complete' set :-)
ReplyDeleteI want to build a '77 OPC set real bad...it's my favorite of all the 70's OPCs mostly from all the different ones vs. Topps.
ReplyDeleteyou can find info about the cub variations through the years at my o-pee-chee blog:

unfortunately i was unable to connect with someone from opc that could have answered the "why?" to the moving of signatures.
Thanks... I'll check it out.
