The Cubs promoted a couple of touted prospects last week.
Matt Mervis had a break-out season last year, with 36 HRs and 119 RBIs as he cruised though A, AA, and AAA. Fans were disappointed when he didn't make the team out of spring training. He hit six homers in the early season at Iowa and the Cubs finally brought him up. Time will tell whether he is a legitimate player of just an AAAA type.
Miguel Amaya has been the Cubs top catching prospect of several years. Injuries have slowed down his progress. Yan Gomes went into the concussion protocol, so the Cubs skipped over their catchers in AAA and brought up Amaya from AA. I guess they figure that it's kinda now or never for Amaya.
There have been 33 players suit up for the Cubs in 2023.
