Year - 1987
Main Brands - Topps, Donruss, Fleer
Number of Players Included Among All the Sets: 32
Players Included in Every Set: 19
The Cubs were a team in transition in 1987 as players from the '84 team were slowly being moved. That resulted in just 19 players having cards in all three of the sets.
The wood design from Topps seems to be one of those that you either love or hate. The Fleer design gets funky several times when the placement of the Cubs logo on the card gets close to the actual Cubs logo on the player's uniform.
The player with the worst treatment would be Ed Lynch. While Fleer and Donruss give him acceptable action shots, Topps came up with one of the ugliest portrait shots ever.
Donruss actually had really nice photography here. They'd come a long way since 1981.
ReplyDeleteLook, Scott Sanderson is Suttoning on his Topps card!
Never noticed the Lynch photo before.
ReplyDeleteAll were decent sets, the Topps set was the end all be all when it came out and Fleer had a great buzz about it but I would lean towards Donruss as the best. It is really close.
Best Cards above Donruss Lee Smith or Fleer Jody Davis (such an odd pose) -
I always likeed the Future Stars logo
You have to give Donruss credit for having both Maddux and Palmiero!
ReplyDeleteYikes, Topps was the odd duck with that Lynch!
ReplyDeleteNo Sportflics? Understandable, given how dreadfully they scan.
