Topps 1969 - 2010 Complete Set Prices

Here is my monthly look at complete set prices, taken from the first five completed sales listings on Ebay on May 1.

**For the second month in a row, a really high-end 1972 set was sold, which again jacked up that year's average. That set was also the only '72 set sold, which also made the average quite high.

**Sets from 2006 and 2007 have really dropped in price. You can pick up unopened factory sets for less than half their original price...so much for baseball cards as an investment!

**The cheapest set was a 1989 set that went for $1.50
**The most expensive set was the high-end '72, which sold for $1,580.55

**Total May 1st average cost to buy one of each set: $6,429.71
**Total 12 month average cost to buy one of each set: $,5608.97

  1. Every month I see this and think to say thanks for it, and every month I fail to leave a comment. So thanks.

As a guy who likes to build sets rather than buy them, it pains me to see that it's not economical to buy bulk lots of old cards and build them that way. I either need to bite the financial bullet or suck it up and deal, I guess.

    Thanks again.

  2. Looks like '78 is about to be a $100 set (on a regular basis).

Glad to see '82 popping up towards $40 again. When it reached under $30, I was like "uh oh!". I don't know how someone can sell the whole set though, for less than the price of a Cal Jr rookie card. I'd rather sell some individual cards from the set and get more than the whole set.

You're welcome!! I built my '72-75 sets with bulk lots and cards from my childhood, then used Beckett and Sportlots to fill in the holes. When it came time for the '69-71 sets, I went the complete set route. Wasn't nearly as fun, but was easier on the wallet.
