In 1995 Topps released a set called "Legends of the '60s." There were just twelve players included. The product was not cardboard....
...it was bronze metal. And these things are serious metal. It is 1/8" thick and weighs a little more than 6 ounces. A stack of 90 baseball cards weight the same.
Topps selected one of the players '60s cards for the design. For Billy, it was his 1967 card.
The backs were modified to include the players entire career.
That meant adding 1967 - 1976. To get it to fit they changed the orientation and removed the cartoons.
The cards were ordered by subscription and you got one per month, at $39.95 per month. That was a pretty steep cost for 1995. For me, it would be steep today. Today you can get them for half the original price. Apparently bronze has not held it's value.
That's cool! Never seen one before.
ReplyDeleteWhat's your preference on the back, original or modified?
ReplyDeleteI like the original better... always like to see cartoons.
