In 1954 the Red Heart Dog food brand issued a 33-card set. The cards were available by sending in labels from the cans of dog food. Apparently the company printed up massive quantities because you could still request a set into the 1970s.
The cards measured in at 2 5/8” by 3 3/4”. The design was a simple one, with a white border, a portrait of the players against a colored background, the team name on the bottom white border, and the players name in a red diamond. Three different colors were used for the backgrounds, red, blue, and green. The Cubs were split evenly between the red and green. The blue wouldn't work because it would have made the blue Cubs hat hard to see.
I was able to get the cards pretty easily and at reasonable prices.
I always forget Kiner was briefly a Cub.
ReplyDeleteOh man... I wonder if someone at the company is sitting on boxes of pristine sets. I like the simple design and the colored backgrounds.
