Five Random Cubs Cards

I've got 17,947 Cubs cards from 218 different brands listed on a spreadsheet. A random number generator picked five cards, one each from the past several decades.

1900s - 1970s: 1954 Bowman #13 Paul Minner  He started 29 games for the Cubs in 1954 and posted a record of 11-11.  That's not bad when you consider that the team won just 64 games.

1980s: 1989 Topps Traded #60 Paul Kilgus  Kilgus was a lesser name in the Palmeiro - Mitch Williams swap with the Rangers.  He was not good at all, going 6-10 on a team that won the division.  He was traded to the Blue Jays after the season.

1990s: 1992 Upper Deck Heroes Highlights #19 Billy Williams  The highlight on the card is September 2, 1970.  On that date Billy played in his 1,117th consecutive game.  He took the next day off.  He wasn't hurt, but just wanted the streak to end.  At the time it was the longest streak in the National League and third-longest overall.

2000s: 2001 Topps Noteworthy #40 Ernie Banks Mr. Cub was one of two Cubs included in this insert set.  The noteworthy career highlights mentioned on the back of the card included his back-to-back MVPs, major league record for home runs by a shortstop, and being voted the teams top player of all time.

2010s: 2014 Heritage #563 Arismendy Alcantara  He made his MLB debut with the Cubs on July 9.  The next day he went 4-5 with 3 RBIs.  From then on it was a steady decline.  He ended the season with a .205 average in 70 games.

  1. I remember when I thought Alcantara was going to be a fixture in the Cubs' lineup for years to come. LOL
