2014 Stadium Club Cubs

Topps brought back a blast from the past with the recent release of 2014 Stadium Club.  The brands initial run went from 1991 - 2003.  It came back in 2008 and then disappeared again until this year.

The glossy no-border cards were a big hit in the 90's.

Now its just one of many different releases for the year.  The set features 200 base cards and the usual pile of parallels and inserts.

The Cubs were pretty much shut out of the inserts, so all I had to chase were the five base cards.  In a departure from previous Stadium Club sets which just featured active players, this year's included both active and retired players.  Two of the retired players were Cubs...

....Ernie and Andre.  Question...in a set famous for it's full bleed color pictures, why did they go with a black and white picture for Mr. Cub?

There are three active Cubs in the set.

It looks like a couple of these pictures were taken during the 2014 season.  The Alcantara picture is from July 12.  Castro is wearing the 1937 throwbacks that they wore on May 18.  I was hoping to see the different throwbacks that the Cubs wore in 2014 show up on 2015 cards.  I didn't have to wait that long!

  1. Man, those cards look good! I was excited about the TSC reboot, but there's only one Padre (Tony Gwynn), so that'll be yet ANOTHER easy "team set" to get.

  2. Love the Rizzo. If I didn't know better I'd have thought the Dawson was a painting. It would make a nice one.
