Five Random Cubs Cards

I've got 16,646 Cubs cards from 195 different brands listed on a spreadsheet. A random number generator picked five cards, one each from the past several decades.

1900s - 1970s: 1967 Topps #87 George Altman This is Altman's final Topps card.  He spent most of the 1967 season in AAA.  He was with the Cubs for a short time in mid-May through mid-June and was a September call-up.  After the season he moved across the Pacific and spent the next eight seasons in Japan.  He was pretty good in Japan, with a career average of .309 and 205 homers.

1980s: 1986 Sportflics Decades Greats 3 in 1 #13 Gabby Hartnett These Sportflics cards are not easy to scan.  The three great catchers from the '30s on the card are Billy Dickey, Mickey Chochrane, and Gabby Hartnett.  The scan picked up most of Hartnett with a little bit of Dickey in the background.

1990s: 1999 Pacific #79 Manny Alexander Manny was the Cubs utility guy during the 1999 season.  He played in 90 games, split between 3rd, short, and 2nd.  He also put up utility player numbers, with 0 homers and just 15 RBIs.

2000s: 2003 Topps Total #243 Mark Bellhorn  Bellhorn was the Cubs starting 3rd basement through late June and was then traded to the Rockies.  A month later the Cubs acquired Aramis Ramirez to play third. Bellhorn was not missed at all.

2010s: 2010 Bowman #74 Kosuke Fukudome  This is the second card in a row that shows the Cubs wearing the blue alternate top at home.  They don't do that any more and I, for one, am glad.

  1. Altman had quite a run from 1962-63. As the Cubs' right fielder in '62, he played alongside Billy Williams and Lou Brock. Traded to the Cardinals in 1963, he played with Stan Musial and Curt Flood.
