A Deep Dive into the Cubs Heritage Cartoons

The cartoons on the backs of Heritage cards have usually been a disappointment.  Typically, Topps would take the cartoon originals and rewrite text on the Heritage cards.  Often, the cartoon and the text were either minimally related or not related at all.  Also, Topps used the same cartoons on the cards of several different players.  That was quite a contrast to the original cards which featured unique cartoons drawn specifically for the player and the text.

There are 16 cards for Cubs players in 2024 Heritage. How many had repeated cartoons?

There are two instances of Cubs with common cartoons.  Not that is not to say that there aren't Cubs that share a cartoon with players from other teams.  I'm assuming they do.  I just can't say because I only have the Cubs cards.

Now let's looks at each player's cartoon individually and ask a couple of question.  First, is the cartoon related to the player?  Second, does the cartoon match the text?

Player: Miguel Amaya
Related to player? Yes, in the sense that a Cub player has a Cub cartoon
Cartoon and text match? Yes

Player: Pete Crow-Armstrong
Related to player? Yes
Cartoon and text match?  No, "Today's Trades" has nothing to do with a defensive player award.

Player: Jose Cuas
Related to player? Yes, in the sense that a Cub player has a Cub cartoon
Cartoon and text match? Yes

Player: Ian Happ
Related to player? Yes, in the sense that a Cub player has a Cub cartoon
Cartoon and text match? I guess so, assuming that the cartoon is showing a player tired from his iron-man streak

Player: Nico Hoerner
Related to player? Yes, in the sense that a Cub player has a Cub cartoon
Cartoon and text match? Yes, though a glove trophy would have been more appropriate.

Player: Nick Madrigal
Related to player? No
Cartoon and text match?  Yes, assuming that the cartoon is showing the player swinging and missing.

Player: Christopher Morel
Related to player? Yes, in the sense that a Cub player has a Cub cartoon
Cartoon and text match? Not even close - a player with binoculars for text on a home run leader?

Player: Daniel Palencia
Related to player? Yes, in the sense that a Cub player has a Cub cartoon
Cartoon and text match?  No, not at all... a cartoon catcher for text on a Hall of Fame pitcher???

Player: Michael Rucker
Related to player? No... this cartoon should be on the card of a Dodger
Cartoon and text match? Yes, and they even have a lefty for Koufax

Player: Justin Steele
Related to player? Yes, in the sense that a Cub player has a Cub cartoon
Cartoon and text match? Yes, it's a pitcher, but why does he have a book in his left hand?

Player: Seiya Suzuki
Related to player? Yes, text that actually talks about the player
Cartoon and text match? Sure

Player: Dansby Swanson
Related to player? Yes, he is one of the former Braves
Cartoon and text match?  Mostly, though there should be 13 players, not five

Player: Jameson Taillon
Related to player? I guess, since Taillon had TJ surgery in 2014
Cartoon and text match? Kind of, though the question mark on the jersey makes no sense.

Player: Hayden Wesneski
Related to player? I suppose, since Wesneski is a pitcher
Cartoon and text match? Nope, a batter doesn't belong with text about a pitcher.

Player: Jordan Wicks
Related to player? Yes, in the sense that a Cub player has a Cub cartoon
Cartoon and text match?  Basically, but again, why show a pitcher holding a book?

Player: Patrick Wisdom
Related to player? Yes, with the text being specific to Wisdom
Cartoon and text match?  Not really... the hitter smacking a 12 has nothing to do with the text.

  1. I disagree on Nick Madrigal - I think it does relate to him because the thing I thought he was most famous for was not striking out (though the cartoon should have him hittng the ball)

  2. I thought the pitcher with a book made sense on the Justin Steele card since the answer was Hendricks “the professor”, but they blew it by using the same cartoon when the answer was Larry Corcoran on the Jordan Wicks card.

  3. I think the question mark on the back of the uniform simply meant "what pitcher" and since it was unknown, they put a question mark there until you answered it. The book was saying he was in the record book for having the lowest ERA in the national league. This is just my opinion.
