The Cubs added player #61 last week and it was a memorable debut.
Pitcher Hayden Wesneski came to the Cubs from the Yankees on August 1 in a trade for Scott Effross. He was called up from Iowa on September 6 and was brought into the game that same day. Brought in relief in the fifth inning, he pitched five strong innings and picked up the win. He gave up just one run on two hits while striking out eight Reds. It was, like I said, a memorable debut.
The Cubs now trail the Angels, Reds, and Pirates by one player and are eight short of tying last year's record of 69. With September call-ups now limited to just two players, I doubt that they will set a new record.
