Five Random Cubs Cards

I've got 20,695 Cubs cards from 304 different brands listed on a spreadsheet. A random number generator picked five cards, one each from the past several decades.

1900s - 1970s: 1962 Topps #47 Bob Will  In his shot Will looks more like an accountant than a ballplayer.

1980s: 1988 Topps Stickers Stickerback #11 Shawon Dunston  Dunston is one player that always looks cool on his cards.  He was a very photogenic player.

1990s: 1990 Donruss #223 Andre Dawson  The guy had a pretty intimidating stance.  Wide and lean, he was ready to mash the ball.

2000s: 2004 Fleer #345 Eric Karros  He didn't play for the 2004 Cubs. He became a free agent after the 2003 season and went to Oakland.

2010s: 2013 Archives #71 Darwin Barney How nice of the RNG to finish up today with a Darwin Barney card. This is his base card from 2013 Archives.  I have several parallels of this in the player collection

Sixties Saturday - 1962 Post

Post issued their second set in 1962 and it has the same number of players as in 1961, 200.

There are ten Cubs cards.  Seven of the ten players were also in the 1961 set.  And sadly, five of those seven saw Post using the same picture as in 1961.  What a bummer that Post did such a Topps thing.

Five Random Cubs Cards

I've got 20,695 Cubs cards from 304 different brands listed on a spreadsheet. A random number generator picked five cards, one each from the past several decades.

1900s - 1970s: 1975 Topps #519 Jim Todd The righty didn't play for the 1975 Cubs.  He was traded to the A's in early April and in return the Cubs got Champ Summers.

1980s: 1987 Team-Issued Rick Sutcliffe  The Cubs gave away this set of cards on Wednesday, July 29.  Sutcliffe didn't play that day as he started the day before, picking up the win for the Cubs.

1990s: 1991 Classic Series III #T14 Andre Dawson I have 25 different Cubs card from 1991 Classic and this one is the only with a vertical orientation.

2000s: 2001 Stadium Club #171 Corey Patterson  I never noticed this before... above his name is says "2000 MLB Future Star."  Shouldn't is say "2001" since this is a 2001 set?

2010s: 2017 Topps 1987 #74 Kyle Schwarber This picture comes from 2015. Schwarber didn't play and day games at Wrigley Field in 2016.  His only Wrigley appearances that year was as a pinch hitter in game three of the World Series, which was a night game.

Sixties Saturday - 1962 Topps Stamps

The 1962 Topps Stamps were inserted into wax pack of Topps baseball cards.  They came in two-stamp panels.  New to the 1962 set were team logo stamps.  There are ten Cubs stamps, nine players and the logo.

All nine players also have Cubs cards in the regular set.  But, there are no Moe stamps for the two Cubs Moes.

Five Random Cubs Cards

I've got 20,695 Cubs cards from 304 different brands listed on a spreadsheet. A random number generator picked five cards, one each from the past several decades.

1900s - 1970s: 1952 Topps #401 Bob Schultz Mrs. WW's maiden name is Schultz.  I'd like to tell you that this guy is related to her, but no, he is no more her relative than Sergeant Schultz.

1980s: 1984 Donruss All-Star #42 Ryne Sandberg  Notice how Donruss still has Ryno listed as a third baseman, even though he spent the entire 1983 season at second.  Oops!

1990s: 1998 Metal #152 Mickey Morandini It is hard to tell from the scan, but yes, this is a Cubs card.  The Cubs picked up Morandini from the Phillies before the 1998 season and he had a pretty good year for the Cubs, replacing the second-time retired Ryne Sandberg.

2000s: 2003 Fleer Tradition Glossy #72 Billy Williams This card could be a what if card, as Billy could have had a card in the 1963 Fleer set that this design is borrowed from.

2010s: 2014 Heritage Clubhouse Collection #CCR-FM Fred McGriff The 2014 Cubs were so bad that Topps didn't give a Clubhouse Collection card to any of their active players.  This McGriff card was the only CC Cubs card from 2014.

Sixties Saturday - 1962 Topps

We're up to 1962 and this week I have the Topps flagship set, with it's wooden borders.

There are 25 Cubs cards in the set.  Four of those are Hall of Famers.  There are also four rookie stars  and two members of the Topps Rookie All-Star team.

And Moes, we have two Moes!  It is a very eclectic group of players.
