Five Random Cubs Cards

I've got 12,132 Cubs cards from 87 different brands listed on a spreadsheet. A random number generator picked five cards, one each from the past several decades.

1900s -  1970s: 1969 Milton Bradley Don Kessinger  This comes from the 1969 version of the Milton Bradley Baseball game.  I've got a post on the entire Cubs set here.  Most of the pictures used on the Cubs cards, including this one of Kessinger, were from the Cubs' press photos.  The same picture (with the logo on the hat) is in the 1969 Cubs media guide.

1980s: 1986 Donruss #117 Steve Trout  The 1986 season was the beginning of the end of Trout's career.  He wasn't very effective as a starter (4-7, 5.14 ERA) ending up spending time working out of the bullpen.

1990s: 1991 Topps Debut #42 Lance Dickson  The card shows that Dickson's MLB debut was on August 9, 1990.  It came just two months after the Cubs selected him with their first pick in the 1990 June draft.  He started the game and went six innings against the Cardinals, allowing three runs.  The Cubs didn't give much run support and they lost 3-1 with Dickson picking up the loss.  He made two more starts over the next nine days and picked up two more losses.  Looks like the Cubs may have rushed him a bit because those three games were his only big league appearances.

2000s: 2006 Heritage Then and Now #7 Derrek Lee  This is one of three Then and Now cards in the 2006 set that feature Musial and Lee.  The 2005 season was Lee's best as he was in the running for the Triple Crown for most of the season.  He ended up leading the NL in hitting, was second in homers and seventh in RBIs.  Lee also was the NL's top All Star vote-getter.

2010s: 2011 Topps Platinum Sparkle #247 Starlin Castro  I really liked these sparkle cards when they came out in 2011.   I'm pretty tired of them now.  I really liked Starlin Castro when he started with the Cubs in 2010.  I'm getting pretty tired of him now--this is his make it or break it season.

  1. Derrek Lee seemed to have just faded away. I don't recall hearing about him actually retiring. There are reports online about the Yankees approaching him last spring but Derrek decided to stay "retired". He was a good player and a good guy. As you know, I've always been on the fence about Starlin. I agree with what you said.
