The 1976 set doesn't have much sentimental value to me. I was in high school and my interest in collecting cards was waning. I did get a few packs and they yielded a few Cubs. I do remember thinking that the Cubs cards looked pretty nice. But I wasn't invested in the set like I was in some other sets.
Years later when I was able to put the entire team set together my initial thought was confirmed....the Cubs cards look real nice.
Take a look for yourself and see if you agree with me.
A couple things really stand out for me. A majority of the players are shown in the home whites. The blue and white of the unis, the blue on the cards, even the blue sky in many pictures...everything combines to make really nice looking cards.
They do look nice. I especially like the position logos. But who the heck is Rob Sperring?
ReplyDeleteOK, I looked him up. I know my memory is bad but at least I recall the names of every other player. Sperring is still a blank. Sorry Rob, wherever you are.
DeleteRob Sperring = Paul Popovich = Mick Kelleher = Steve Dillard
ReplyDeleteStill, I do remember those three, too. "Oh, Rob!"
DeleteI remember Sperring's first game, a double and a homerun and Jack Brickhouse was over the moon. Of course reality came very quickly.
DeleteI don't really like them. Doesn't have anything to do with my dislike of the Cubs, it's the pink. Even when I was collecting as a kid I didn't like the Cubs and Twins cards from '76.
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way about the pink when the cards came out, but over time its grown on me. It seems to match better with the red on the Cubs uniforms and hats, which seems to be a bit washed out...not bright red. The red Topps used with the Expos seems a bit too harsh. I may have to play with photoshop and see just what a blue/red Cubs card would look like.
