Keep the Protective Coating?

Among the many packages awaiting me after vacation were several filled with Finest cards.  I've started sorting and scanning, but have a couple questions.

First, it seems that from 1995 through 1999 Topps put a protective coating sticker on each card.

What have you done with it...kept it on or taken it off?  I'm inclined to rip it off since the cards will be stored in a binder.  I'm also not worried about the resale value of the card.

Question two:  were Finest cards prone to bowing?  I've had a tough time scanning many of them because they are bowed.  I know that there were some bowing issues with Chrome a couple years back.  Was this an issue with Finest, too, or did I just get some bad cards.

Just a quick post today...it's back to the scanner.

  1. FWIW, I tear the protective covering off those cards if I am storing them in a binder and especially if they are staying in my collection. The one concern you might have is whether that protective coating has adhered somewhat to the card front. I had that happen on one of the 15 or 20 that I had.

As for bowing, I haven't seen all that many Finest, but they seemed to bow a little bit.

    Hope that helps.

  2. I took the covering off of the ones that stay in my collection. They can be tricky to get off but it does make the card look better in my opinion. I guess since the Finest cards are printed on the same chromium stock that Chrome is, they could be prone to bowing a bit. I can't remember if any of mine had a serious problem like 2010 Topps Chrome.

  3. Pull it. It's ugly and takes away the beauty of the cards.

  4. I've never pulled the protective coating. Is there a specific way to them off? Slow and steady or just a quick rip? If it's a band aid, then I'm a slow and steady guy.

  5. I haven't pulled the coating off of the ones I got that way. I have others that were removed long ago.

I don't think the coating effects the sale price any, or it shouldn't maybe some sellers try to tweak their price up if they still have the coating just for the "Brand New Never Used" (New Old Stock) sort of idea thing. Well more because they are too greedy.

  6. I rip it off for the exact same reason Jeff said. It's just plain ugly.

  7. Peel those suckers. Just take it slow. Pick a corner and start to remove it slowly and you should be fine. I think you'll be pleased at how much better looking the cards are once that covering is gone.

  8. I have some and yes, they tend to bow a bit. I'm not sure why. Kinda like Topps Chrome from a couple years back

I have never peeled the stickers off. I kept them on, although the temptation to peel them off is pretty strong.

  9. If I were to guess... I'd say I pulled off the coating of 1% of the cards. They look a lot nicer w/o the coating, but to sit there and pull them off of hundreds of cards would drive me insane. Plus over the years, I have discovered that they're a little more difficult to remove than back in the day.
