I've got 21,281 Cubs cards from 316 different brands listed on a spreadsheet. A random number generator picked five cards, one each from the past several decades.
1900s - 1970s: 1969 Sunoco Pin Billy Williams This comes from a set put out by Sunoco. It is listed in the Standard Catalog as a 1969 set and I always accepted it as that. However, when looking over the checklist to write this post I saw that it includes Joe Pepitone. Pepi came to the Cubs in 1970, so the catalog's dating is wrong.
1980s: 1984 Fleer #506 Steve Trout Action shots that show you the ball coming out of the pitcher's hand always look great to me.
2000s: 2000 Metal #54 Mark Grace I don't recall Grace wearing high socks like this often. For some reason, it makes him look slower (and he wasn't the fastest runner to begin with).
2010s: 2013 Allen and Ginter Across the Years #RS Ryne Sandberg This set talks about things that happened on the player's birthday. Sandberg was born on September 18, 1959, and on that date the Memphis State 8 integrated the school for the first time.
I don't have any direct knowledge, but it's possible the Sunoco date is only partly wrong. Sometimes with that kind of promo there's a new one each week or so, so it's possible that they started the set in 1969 and continued releasing new ones into 1970. Just a thought.
ReplyDeleteHere's where it gets really funky: The catalog also lists a 1969 Sunoco set for the Brewers….and the Brewers didn’t exist until 1970.
