1950s / 1960s: Topps 1961 #364 Moe Drabowsky Moe didn't even pitch for the Cubs in 1961; he was traded to the Braves at the end of March.
1970s: Topps 1971 #121 Cubs Rookies The Cubs were 0 for 2 on this one. Jim Dunegan was a right handed pitcher the Cubs drafted in the second round in 1967. He made seven appearance in 1970, going 0-2 with a 4.73 ERA. His last game in the majors was Roe Skidmore's first and only major league game, September 17, 1970, against the Cardinals. Skidmore pinch hit for the pitcher in the 7th inning and singled to left. The next batter grounded into a double play, and with that, Skidmore's major league career, was over. He ended up with a 1.000 batting average! He bounced around the minors until 1975.
1980s: Topps 1982 #537 Doug Capilla Capilla never pitched for the Cubs in 1982. He was traded to the Giants in the off season. He went to spring training with the Giants, but didn't make the team and was released at the end of March. He spent the 1982 season in the minors with two different organizations and retired after the season.
1990s: Star Nova 1990 #144 Ryne Sandberg This card is one of the nine card Nova set. Most of the Star cards highlight a different portion of the player's career. One, though, has nothing on the back except a team logo. This is the logo card.
2000s: Topps 2011 Gold #558 Carlos Zambrano The random number generator is playing a cruel joke on me! I thought I was done with this guy. But no, the RNG won't let me forget him! I'm really looking forward to the Ozzie / Zambrano combo in Miami. Should be very interesting.
After his playing career, Jim Dunegan worked construction in the Phoenix area. One of my little league coaches was a co-worker of his and got Dunegan to come to a couple of our practices. I should have had him autograph this card. I was a good-field/no-hit outfielder and Dunegan worked with the pitchers, so I didn't have much contact with him.
ReplyDeleteI have an autographed photo of Roe Skidmore from the 1970's. I must have gotten it TTM. I don't know why. He wearing an Indianapolis Indians uniform so the picture is from 1972 or 73. BTW do you have an estimate as to when your collection will hit 10,000?
