Five Random Cubs Cards

I've got 11,476 Cubs cards from 81 different brands listed on a spreadsheet. A random number generator picked five cards, one each from the past several decades. This week the RNG picked out some of the big names...no Tuffy Rhodes today.

1950s / 1960s: 1963 Post #169 Ernie Banks  This card comes from the set that was on the backs of boxes of Post cereal.  The set is one of those "some day" sets that I'd like to add to my collection.  I really like the picture on the card...that look is pure Ernie Banks.

1970s: 1979 TCMA All Time Cubs Ernie Banks  The Random Number Generator seems to be saying "Let's Pick Two!" so we get our second card in a row of Mr. Cub.  This card comes from the second TCMA All Tie Cubs set.  I've got a post about the entire set here.

1980s: 1987 Kay Bee Superstars of Baseball #28 Ryne Sandberg  This card comes from the Sandberg player collection.  Did anyone shop at Kay Bee Toys?  They had shops in most of the malls that we went to when our two oldest were little.  The stores were always kinda messy and filled with cheap, knock off stuff.  It seemed like a poor mans Toys R Us.  We'd stop in just to give the boys a distraction, but rarely bought stuff there.

1990s: 1997 Pacific #250 Mark Grace The Cubs first baseman had a solid season in 1997, hitting .319, good for sixth best in the NL. He also finished in the NL's Top Ten in hits, walks, and on-base percentage.  He made the NL All Star team and played in two innings.  He had an at bat, too, but grounded out. The AL pitcher he faced....Mariano Rivera.

2000s: 2008 Topps Factory Team Set #CHC4 Kerry Wood  I think this is the first time a card from a Factory Team set was picked.  The picture on this card is different from the base set, which looked like...

...this.  The 2008 season was his final in his first go-around with the Cubs.  Working exclusively out of the pen as the Cubs closer, he was 5-4 with 34 saves.  He also made the All Star team.  He was a free agent after the season and the Cubs chose to let him go.

  1. There was a KayBee store in Niles, IL at Golf Mill Shopping Center. I don't remember if I bought anything there. I recall it being rather cramped. The generator did a nice job this time. Hope Gracie can get his alcohol problem under control.

  2. We were in that store in Golf Mill many times....that was the closest mall to our house when we lived in Des Plaines.
