2023 1988 vs. 1988 1988

Let's take a look at how the Topps' 2023 version of the 1988 design compares to the real deal.  I know that they won't be identical.  That was figured out years ago with Heritage.  The mystery, of course, is why can't Topps make a clone of their own product?

The colors are off.  The original has a darker shade of blue.  The font of the team name is smaller on  the original also.  It also looks like the player's name font is a bit thicker on the original.

Ryne Sandberg has cards in both of the sets and the silver pack set as well, so why not take a look at all of them side by side.

All three show him at bat at Wrigley.  The action shot on the 2023 card has a tighter crop and shows him in action rather that awaiting the pitch.  The silver pack card has him in the field.

  1. I love 1988 Topps and I'm glad to see a tribute to the set, but the player names is what bothers me most. You can see it on Morel's card...his first name is regular but the last name is stretched. I don't think they ever did that in 1988. Compare Don Mattingly's 1988 to his 2023..."Don" is stretched this year, but in 1988 it is the same size as "Mattingly." It just looks bad, and what's worse, they're not consistent at all with it. If they stretch "Don," why not stretch "Ryne"?

    1. This bugs me because people making custom cards on their home computers don't seem to have any issue creating exact duplicates of old designs, but somehow Topps can't manage it themselves.
