The 2023 Cubs Pitchers

Today and Monday I'll have cards for all of the players that have made an appearance for the 2023 Cubs.  Most of the cards are homemade since there were just six current Cubs in series one.  Also, no Opening Day and no Factory team sets either eliminates another official Topps source.  The pitches are up today and tomorrow I'll have the position players.

The Cubs pitching staff is off to a good start.  The starters lead the NL with an ERA of 2.66.  It would be great if they could keep this up for the entire season though that seems pretty unlikely.

The Starters

Smyly, Steele, and Stroman have all looked really good so far.  Taillon and Wesneski showed much improved in their third starts after each having two shaky ones to begin the season.  However, Taillon was placed on the injured list yesterday and Javier Assad was recalled from Iowa to take his place in the rotation.  Also, someone will get bumped from the rotation when Kyle Hendricks returns off of the IL.

Two things with the a couple of the cards I made.  I chose the picture for Drew Smyly because it showed him being, well, smiley.  The Steele card is my attempt at being artsy.  I chose to not do a tight crop because I wanted to show the lights and the grandstands in the background.

The Bullpen

The Cubs have a very odd bullpen as they are all right-handed.  In this era of match-ups and stat crunching, they cannot do the lefty-lefty thing.  And thus far it hasn't been an issue.  The pen also lacks an established closer.  I guess that they are hoping to have someone develop into that role as the season moves forward.
