I'm back home after spending ten days with Mrs. WW visiting WW Jr. in Berlin. It was a wonderful trip as we got to see so many of the sights... the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, remains of the Berlin Wall, a boat trip on the Spree River, and a ton of other things.
I was on the lookout for anything baseball-related and didn't find much. There were a few people wearing baseball hats, but WW Jr. said those are most likely locals that want to look cool in an American hat.
There are no cement sidewalks in Berlin. Instead, they use pavers and if you look closely, you can see home plate along the edges. I know, it's kind of a stretch.
But then on our last day I struck gold. We rented bikes to ride around town (they have awesome bike lanes) and our final destination was a ride through Tempelhof Field. Tempelhof is Berlin's old airport and has been turned into a park. It was also the landing area for all of the planes during the Berlin Airlift of 1948-49.
We spotted this along the north side of the airport...a baseball field. Actually, there are two fields, this one for baseball and another west of it for softball. The fields were built by American GIs after the war and a German sports association, TIB, began using them in 2010, after the airport closed.
It was nice to see a bit of America when I was 4,300 miles from home.
It's too bad that there wasn't a game going on while you were there, as it would've been interesting to know if they were playing the game any differently.
