IT'S HERE!!! Let the season begin. This is the year!!!!!!
The best thing about opening day is that the Cubs are in first place. Sure, they share it with the entire division, but, at least for today, they're in first.
To celebrate opening day, I've got the Cubs all time opening day lineup. The lineup features a majority of the players from the '60's and later. That seems odd to me, considering the long history of the Cubs. In fact, of the entire lineup, I have seen all but three (Hartnett, Grimm and Pafko) of them play (and I'm not that old).
Pitcher: Fergie Jenkins, 7 Opening Day starts This Fleer 1984 card would be among Fergie's last as an active player. He was released in the spring of 1984.
Catcher: Gabby Hartnett, 12 starts In 1980 TCMA released the All-Time Cubs set and Hartnett was included.
This card of Mark Grace is from the 2006 Fleer Greats of the Game set.
This Charlie Grimm card is a part of the 1992 Old Style team issued set. Its one of the nicer looking sets the Cubs put out.
First Base (since 1900): Charlie Grimm and Mark Grace, 12 starts
Second Base: Ryne Sandberg, 13 starts Bowman, 1989, Bowman's first modern set shows Sandberg in a classic pose.
Shortstop: Shawon Dunston, 11 starts I picked this card from Donruss 1994 because it shows the brown ivy, something we see at Wrigley until mid-May.
Third Base: Ron Santo, 13 starts This is from Pacific Legends. Santo was featured in two of the three Legends sets.
Left Field: Billy Williams, 10 starts This card is from TCMA's Stars of the 60's set.
Center Field (since 1900): Andy Pafko, 7 starts Pafko was name to the Cubs All Century team and was included in the set the team gave away at Wrigley Field in 1999.
Right Field: Sammy Sosa, 12 starts This Stadium Club card from 1997 shows Sammy chugging around the bases.
