2022 Heritage and 1973 Topps Side-By-Side

It's time for my annual side-by-side comparison of the Heritage set and it's Topps counterpart.  As usual there are differences between the two, and as usual, I have no idea why Topps cannot or won't make Heritage and identical twin.

The most obvious difference is the color of the players name.  The Cubs player names were red in 1973, but Heritage has changed them to yellow. That is just bad.  The red and blue look perfect against the Cubs uniforms.  The yellow looks awful.  I don't recall any previous Heritage sets changing a major color like that.  The rest is pretty close.  The silhouetted player looks like an exact copy and I believe Topps kept the color of those the same as in 1973.

The 1973 set was the last hurrah for many of the 1969 Cubs.  The 2016 Cubs have pretty much disappeared from the Cubs scene, so the player and position matches won't look good at all for the 2022 Cubs.

The 1973 Cubs had three future Hall of Famers and finished in 5th place with 77 wins.  The 2022 Cubs barely have three player that would make the Hall of OK.  77 wins would be a great season for them.

  1. At least the designs match pretty well this year

  2. SABR had a piece from Nick Vossbrink yesterday showing how a bunch of Giants had the exact same background for their Heritage cards. Same here with the Cubs. Look at Happ, Heyward, and Contreras--exactly the same background. Although on Heyward's the clouds are a little different.

    1. I saw the GIF he made... crazy. Topps has been doing this for years. Every year I make the suggestion that, if they are Photoshopping backgrounds, why not use era-appropriate backgrounds. Put the Cubs into 1973 Wrigley Field.

  3. Actually Topps did not do a bad job on the Cubs cards - the Ortega card stands out even though there was no action vertical cards in 73.
