I'LL DO IT FOR FREE!!!

Seriously.

At this point I think Topps is doing this on purpose just to annoy me.  They can't be this incompetent, can they?

I blasted Topps in this post from February 18 regarding the factual errors in the Wrigley Field insert set.  I also Tweeted Topps and Sooz from A Cardboard Problem, who also works for Topps.  I appreciate the fact that she replied pretty quickly.

Well, here we go again.

This Then and Now card is from Heritage 2016.  It's nice that both the then and now are Cubs.

I can overlook the fact that the picture of Fergie is most definitely not from 1967.  Based on the uniform and the length of his hair and sideburns, this is probably 1970 or 1971.  Sooz explained that Topps is limited in the photos that they can use.  However, Topps must have a picture or two in its archives of Fergie from 1967.

Anyway, that's not the problem.  For that, we turn the card over.

Read the little paragraph and see if you know what the mistake was.

As a long-time Cubs fan I picked it out immediately.

Fergie did not have seven 20-win campaigns in a row.  It was six.  From 1967 - 1972. He also won 20 games not eight times, but seven.

Don't believe me?

Check his plaque in Cooperstown.

How hard is it to do a little fact-checking?

How on earth can Topps continue to make blunders like this?  Who do they have writing these?  And who should be fired for the editing job?  Does Topps even care about accuracy?  It sure doesn't seem like they do.

Once again, I make this plea.... I WILL BE THE OFFICIAL CHICAGO CUBS FACT CHECKER!!!  I'LL DO IT FOR FREE!!
I JUST WANT SOME ACCURACY!!!!!

But really, Topps, there are plenty of bloggers out there that are far more knowledgeable about their team than whoever you have doing the writing on your baseball cards.  Get a blogger per team to do some proofreading.

I know that most would be thrilled to do it.  I know most would be thrilled to have things done correctly.

Email me.  I can start tomorrow.

  1. I won't do it for free, but they're welcome to pay me in cards. I think they have a few sitting around.

  2. I've said it before and I'll say it again... you would be the perfect person for this job.

  3. My main beef with the card is that the big "THEN & NOW" letters should be orange for Cubs' cards.

  4. I'd be willing to provide 1967 commentary for the Phillies. For example, for the past 49 years I've had one brain cell tasked with remembering that Tony Gonzalez hit .339 that season - 2nd in the NL.

    1. Buy vintage only. I'm getting better cards, supporting a small businessman, and my money is not going into Topps' pocket. It's a win for everyone but Topps, which is ok by me.
