2017 Honus Bonus Cubs

I know that there are many old sets out there that I've never heard of.  Its always a pleasant surprise when I find them.

On the other hand, I find if very frustrating when I find a recent set that I'm not aware of.  I like to think that I'm fairly plugged in as a collector and I get disappointed in myself when I find modern stuff that I didn't know about.  That's what I have today.

In 2017, a set called Honus Bonus was released.  The set's premise was to combine baseball cards and fantasy baseball.  You can read more about it here.

The checklist of the set has 500 cards.  How did I miss a set that big?  Shame on me!

I found a Cubs team set and purchased it.  It has 19 logo-less Cubs players.  The card design is a bit odd, as the players are in black and white while the background is in color.  I've seen cards do the opposite, making the background black and white, but not this.  I don't think it makes the cards very attractive at all.

The product must not have been too successful as it was a one and done.

  1. The B&W players in front of a colored background is a weird choice. It looks odd.

    2. TONS of 1/1s. Very much in the vein of Topps Moments & Milestones, where they did cards for each home run or win or something and did a separate serial number for each one. I have an Ichiro 1/1 from the set, and it's literally one of 3,030 1/1s each representing one of his career hits.

On the one hand, it's cool that I have a 1/1 of a clear Hall of Famer. On the other hand...it's not REALLY a 1/1 if there are over 3,000 of them!

  3. I bought a collection two years ago and there were a ton of these sitting in the box.

  4. I enjoyed this set because of the diverse checklist. The reason the set was one and done is because the company that made it went out of business like three months after it was released. From what I remember, there were plans for an Update set of sorts that never happened. I do have to wonder if production for any of those cards started. I know when Fleer went bankrupt in mid-2005, the planned 2005 Fleer Tradition Series 2 was scrapped, but over the years some of those cards have reached the market.

  5. I opened up a box of this a couple of months ago. It's kind of a fun break, but it started to feel pretty repetitive because the cards all look the same. My 2(!) guaranteed 1/1's in the box were Albert Pujols and Giancarlo Stanton. As Bret said earlier, it's kind of cool to have a 1/1 of such high-caliber players, but can I really claim it's a 1/1?

  6. They really would be great looking cards if the background was b&w and the player color. It's kind of a Deco look.
